Why I create art

Why I create art

There are many reasons why people make art but in this blog post I would like to share with you why I create art.

I make art because I enjoy it, I love it. It gives me a sense of liberation.

As long as I can remember, right from my childhood, I always loved to draw. I started doing sketches on paper when I was a baby and its remained a strong part of who I am. I have always been naturally skilled at drawing. I was quite good at establishing proportions, balance and drawing things to likeness for my age. At primary school I recall whenever we had to draw something in class my friends would ask me to draw for them.

Over the years I drew many subjects, essentially anything that caught my attention which were predominantly animals and people I found interesting. Its a shame I do not have my childhood drawings having moved home several times in my life. I recall gravitating towards creative endeavours such as art, music, acting and the movies with deep interests in the history of art, architecture and the built environment. Central to all is art. An expression of my imagination, what I perceive something to be, represent or make me feel. I am interested in the interpretation of an experience.

Although I like and appreciate realistic artwork I am drawn to figurative and semi abstract art. Some abstraction allows the artist to really communicate and connect to people beyond the visual. People can relate to a feeling that you have or an expression that you want to share. The visual is important like the colours, shades and forms but a viewer connecting with a feeling or understanding of where I am coming from beyond the obvious visual technicalities of the the artwork is extremely fulfilling, the 'Ikagai moment'.

I do art because I feel beside being a hobby it connects me to my childhood, it grounds me and so I have always managed to make sometime for it. It is my way of sharing and giving to the world through my experience. It is what I do, my channel and connection with people.
